Motivational Interviewing with Richard shorter – Part Three – Ambivalence and Change Talk

22nd Jun 2026, 1:00pm - 3:00 pm

Most performance conversations stall at ambivalence. “I know I should…” “I want to but…” “I’m not sure…” In this third session, we go deeper. You’ll learn how to: • Spot ambivalence without fighting it • Surface intrinsic motivation • Recognise and strengthen change talk • Help athletes uncover their own reasons, decisions and next steps. This is where motivational interviewing becomes powerful - not persuading, not lecturing, not fixing. But helping someone hear themselves say why change matters. If you work with performers under pressure, this is the skill that separates instruction from real development. Would it be unhelpful to sharpen your ability to guide change without forcing it?
