Coleg y Cymoedd

student-athletes will be given the opportunity to thrive and fulfil both their sporting and educational potential without compromising either

Coleg y Cymoedd (meaning college of the valleys) was formed in 2013, following the merger of Coleg Morgannwg and The College Ystrad Mynach. Over 10,000 learners study at Coleg y Cymoedd each year with sites in Nantgarw, Rhondda Ystrad Mynach and Aberdare. The college offers a wide range of Full and Part Time courses from Entry to Degree Level in over 15 Curriculum areas. The college has invested significantly in its facilities in recent years, with standout projects including the Nantgarw Campus building (a £40 million award winning campus), Aberdare Campus (a £22 million campus opened 2017), and the opening in March 2023 of a new £5.1 million Centre of Sporting Excellence build at the Nantgarw campus supporting education and sport performance. The facility will provide a high-quality facility for the campus and young people in the region, allowing us to cater more extensively to our student-athletes.

Our learners (past and present) have achieved sporting recognition at regional, national and international level during and post their time at the college, with many progressing into Higher Education, employment and Professional sport.

More about this site

Achieving the TASS Dual Career Accreditation recognises our commitment to supporting dual career student-athletes and becoming the first FE College in Wales to receive the accreditation we endeavour to provide the necessary holistic support to help nurture success for student-athletes. We believe that by providing academic flexibility, personal development, 1-1 lifestyle support as well as the correct environment student-athletes will be given the opportunity to thrive and fulfil both their sporting and educational potential without compromising either.

The accreditation allows us to build on our current partnerships with National Governing Bodies of sport, including professional sport and Higher Education Institutes that would enable a smooth progression and transition enabling individuals to continue their learning and/or employability locally or further afield.

The TASS Dual Career Accredited establishment aligns with our core values and enhance our reputation of being a student-athlete centred institute able to maximise the learner’s study and sporting ambition and highlights the synergy with the College vision and mission that Coleg y Cymoedd helps to inspire our learners and transform lives.
